recently, i completed a piece for a friend, using their own garment. they gave me liberty to enhance their shirt however i wished (they were sure to add that the garment was a cherished one).
at first, this felt a bit overwhelming – where should i start? how can i enhance the garment to be the most helpful possible for the wearer, without compromising its visual appeal? what kind of crystals would be the most impactful for this individual? the options seemed limitless.
then, i grounded myself & focused less on the garment, & more on my friend/client. what are THEiR needs, that i can see (or have already observed)? i started with some basic questions:
- in what kind of scenarios would my client be wearing this garment? formal or informal?
- what kind of weather conditions would they encounter while wearing this garment? hot or cold? wet or dry?
- what kind of work does my friend do, & could they wear this garment to work?
with these questions raised, the design process flowed easily. as a university professor in South Florida, my friend could benefit from a design targeting their ability to communicate effectively, that would be minimal & lightweight enough to wear while teaching. since a professor needs to be able to speak clearly & confidently, i felt that the garment’s collar would be the perfect location for the design. targeting the wearer’s throat chakra through the use of blue crystals is an effective method, but placing the blue crystals NEAR the wearer’s actual throat would magnify their impact. aquamarine crystals, ranging from opaque blue/white to nearly translucent blue, felt like the perfect choice thanks to their capacity to aid in communication & negotiation.
many of my designs feature clear quartz – even those that do not directly target the charging of the wearer’s crown chakra. i do this for one simple reason: clear quartz amplifies the energy of any nearby crystals. so, i included one clear quartz in the center of the design to not only help attract energy to the embroidered aquamarine crystals, but it is situated precisely to channel this energy towards the wearer’s throat due to the point on the clear quartz.
